Having planned to stay in the school dorm for the summer instead of going home, Hachiken seems left with no other option when the dorm is closed for repairs. Aki helps a worried Hachiken by offering him part time work at her house.
After arriving at Aki's house he is immediately threatened by her father. Furthermore, Aki's mother and grandmother find out he is the "son of a businessman" and begin to eye him like birds of prey! After dinner, Hachiken tries to text his family and tell them he will not be coming home, but Aki's house is out of cell phone service range and there is no signal….
The next day, Aki tells him that he should contact his parents, so during break time he tries to go to Komaba's house, but gets completely lost. Luckily, Komaba happens to pass by and takes Hachiken to his house. Komaba is upset and tells Hachiken to call Aki's family right away.
After seeing the Komaba family farm, Hachiken unthinkingly shares his misgivings about the way they do business. Komaba doesn't know how to reply, and instead takes Hachiken to the batting cage that his father made. Komaba practices pitching on Hachiken while telling him about his dreams of becoming a baseball player and running his own farm.
Aki's grandfather arrives to pick up Hachiken, but then asks him to gut and skin a deer that they hit on the way. Hachiken is nervous and reluctant, but manages to clean the deer himself. The freshly prepared deer meat is delicious, but Hachiken can't seem to get his mind off of the smell of the deer that seems stuck to his hands. On the way back, things seem to be going pretty well with Aki in the back of the truck, until…they hit a bear, which sort of ruins the moment.
From Komaba's dire business situation, to getting lost and worrying Aki's family, to the taste of a deer he cleaned himself, Hachiken's summer break has already given him many things to think about. But he seems to have gathered the courage to not run away from his problems. Sometimes the strict teachings of adults to growing children are truly full of affection.
