“Silver Spoon” Episode 5 Recap: “Hachiken Runs Away”

Here “it” comes! The Big Dorm Escape Plan!

Hachiken is riding a chestnut horse around the Ezono school grounds with the other equestrian club members when they come across a mysterious crop circle. Later, back in the dorm, the students seem less fascinated by the crop circle itself than they are upset about how it will affect this year's crop. So is life at an agricultural school. Saikawa's cellphone rings. "It's coming tonight…" a voice on the line says. Everyone begins talking about sneaking out without permission to see it, but Hachiken still doesn't know what "it" actually is.

Planning to escape from the dorms is serious business. When cellphones are collected for the night, Hachiken's is swapped with a dummy phone. The time comes to put their plan into action. "This is it, the 'point of no return'," Saikawa says. With him at the lead, the group makes it through the courtyard only to be faced with a security camera near the restrooms! Beppu tosses pizza dough at the camera to cover the lens and the teachers become aware of their escape. It's too late, though, and the group is able to get away successfully. On the way, they get caught in a snare, catch a strawberry thief, and hold off dogs. Their numbers gradually dwindle until just two remain.

Only Saikawa and Hachiken get to the crop circle, the place where "it" will supposedly show up. And what do they see before them? An enormous self-propelled harvester! For the young farming students, it's a sight they hope to see at least once in their lives.

In the end, Hachiken and the gang must clean the latrines as punishment. Saikawa asks Tamako why she wanted to see "it" so badly. She responds that next week her family will be getting a large self-propelled harvester, so she wanted to get a preview of what it looked like. At this, some in the group turn to jelly.

High school kids can turn any little adventure into an exciting and fun experience. Regardless of punishment, what's important are the memories that they shared together that night.
