Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, which began broadcasting in 1995 and achieved great success in the latter ‘90s, has vividly returned in HD. A Blu-ray box has been announced for the HD remake which is also being broadcast on TV. Among the various works in the Gundam series, it seems that Mobile Suit Gundam Wing is favored for its magnificent characters and mecha in addition to its vivid animation.
Every Sunday at 7 p.m., a 30-minute selection is being broadcast on BS 11 in Japan as a part of Anime Plus’ “Gundam G History.” This time slot is devoted to Gundam works. The last episode of Mobile Suit Gundam, “Escape,” was played during this time slot on July 28, and the HD version of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing began after this. Since the anime is being broadcast on BS 11 for free, it seems that it’s not just a way for fans of the series to watch it again, but it’s also a way to acquire new fans.
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing continues from last year’s Mobile Fighter G Gundam and is set in the early days of the Gundam series in a different world than previous works. In an age in which humanity has advanced into space, a war breaks out between Earth and residents of the colonies. The story depicts the battles and destinies of main character Heero Yuy and four other Gundam pilots. The work has many female fans and is even known to be popular overseas, primarily in America. In 1997, the continuation OVA Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz was produced.
There will be two Blu-ray boxes released. The first will release on Nov. 22 of this year and the second on Jan. 29, 2014. The creator in charge of the 2-in-1 box illustration, accommodating both blu-ray boxes, has been revealed. Hajime Katoki who is in charge of mecha design will be illustrating.
Furthermore, the box illustrations for each volume will be done by Yoshihito Hishinuma and Iwao Teraoka. As for the inner jackets, mechanical animation director Masanori Shino and Sakura Asagi, illustrator of New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Frozen Teardrop, are working together on them.
