On July 6, Gintama: The Movie: The Final Chapter: Be Forever Yorozuya was released nationwide in Japan and got off to a powerful start. During its opening weekend, the movie made 281,859,900 yen in box office revenue. This is much more than was anticipated, and is a 40% increase compared to the popular 2010 movie Gintama: The Movie: A New Retelling Benizakura Arc. Given the numbers, there is a high possibility that Be Forever Yorozuya will end up making more box office revenue than its predecessor.
Even as an anime movie, Be Forever Yorozuya is poised to become a huge hit. The screen average is 2.2 million yen, and it succeeded in nabbing the top spot for movies released on the same day. Screening in 127 theaters is by no means considered a small number, and it can be said that this is the result of the legion of fans who showed the series’ popularity by packing theaters to see the movie. Furthermore, the movie is being widely acclaimed on user review sites, and it seems that there is anticipation for even more expansion due to word of mouth.
Be Forever Yorozuya is the second movie based on the popular manga Gintama by Hideaki Sorachi that is currently serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump (Shueisha). Seven years after the TV anime began, the series now has two films. For this film, series creator Sorachi personally handled the story and character planning. The film is also labeled as the conclusion to the Gintama anime and is a grand finale that looks at the past, present, and future of the series. Be Forever Yorozuya is sure to be one of the most talked about movies this summer.
