CCC Aims for New Anime Production Business and Private Brand DVD Releases

Culture Convenience Club (CCC), a company operating in Japan’s entertainment industry, is challenging a new business model by advancing to anime production. On July 3, CCC announced the start of an anime production business, and they also started renting DVDs of the popular anime Teekyu in every Tsutaya store in Japan.

Teekyu is an adaptation of the original manga serialized in a comic magazine by Earth Star Entertainment, a subsidiary company of CCC, and it will be rented as private brand DVDs. This year, CCC has already released four titles––*Sekai de Ichiban Tsuyoku Naritai!*, Encouragement of Climb, Ketsuekigata-kun!, and Mangirl!––all of which are short anime series.

Earth Star Entertainment was established in 2006 and conducts the planning and production of movies, music, and publications. In spring 2011, they launched the monthly manga magazine Comic Earth Star, bringing joint work with anime and voice actors into their perspective. Moreover, they started producing short anime series starting in fall 2012.

Teekyu, a tennis comedy anime, is the first work in that line. The anime adaptation is gathering attention among the fans as a super high-speed anime that was previously unheard of, as it has 12 pages of the original manga compressed into the short period of merely 90 seconds. “This is too chaotic!” they say.

Four other titles are also being adapted into anime from works serialized in Comic Earth Star. Ketsuekigata-kun! broadcast from April to May this year, and although it is a mini series, it gave rise to attention through its gorgeous cast of voice actresses.

According to CCC’s corporate HQ, supervisor of Earth Star Entertainment’s operations, their recent initiative with anime is the manifestation of bringing the “SPA model” into the entertainment field.

SPA (Specialty Retailer of Private Label Apparel) is well known as a successful model for selling clothing. Everything from planning to manufacturing and retail is coordinated and completed within one company group.

In CCC’s anime production, CCC manages the planning and development of original works with their comic magazine as a foundation and also the production and distribution of the anime. Also, holding a distribution network of magazines, publications, and DVDs is the strong point of this group. It might be fair to say that this is a business initiative unencountered before. In the future, CCC’s corporate HQ will continue to manage the planning and selling of comic magazines that aim for distribution of the base manga, selling rights for manga and television broadcasts, and the selling and rental distribution of DVDs in their stores.
