The second part of the grand project Tezuka Osamu’s Buddha, a three-part movie series based on Tezuka’s masterpiece manga, is finally underway. It has been revealed that the animated movie Buddha 2: Tezuka Osamu’s Buddha - Owarinaki Tabi will be released in February 2014. Furthermore, this work was also shown at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival in France. A special video for market use at roughly nine minutes in length was screened and gained favorable reactions. Despite the work not even being completed yet, it has been bathing in attention since it was announced.
On May 20, the special video screened at Cannes Film Festival became available on the official site. Even those abroad can check out this popular video.
Tezuka Osamu’s Buddha is based on Tezuka’s original manga Buddha, which he drew during the ‘70s and ‘80s. The story of Buddha - which follows the life of Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, and is uniquely explained by Tezuka and packed full of drama - has received high praise both in Japan and abroad. The decision to adapt the work into a movie series was announced in 2010. Because the length of the original work’s story is long, it was announced that the movies would be a trilogy. In 2011, Toei Animation released the first part of the trilogy, Tezuka Osamu’s Buddha: Akai Sabaku yo! Utsukushiku. Now, the long-awaited second part of the trilogy will be released roughly three years after the first.
The second part picks up where the first left off, and depicts what happens to Siddhartha, prince of the Shakya tribe, when he casts everything aside and decides to set out on a journey. Siddhartha repeatedly experiences unmerciful death and pain around him. Meanwhile, an incident occurs involving the secret of Prince Ruri’s birth in the kingdom of Kosala. The incident is incited by Prince Ruri when he invades Siddhartha’s home country, the kingdom of Shakya. Siddhartha’s and Ruri’s fates then become intertwined.
