The Tokiwa-so Project, a project that supports aspiring manga artists, will begin holding a course called “Manzemi Pro Course: Getting Pro in Background Drawing Part 2” later this month. The theme of the course is “to make a living with manga for decades,” and it aims to bring even beginners up to a level to pass as a pro’s assistant.
The “Manzemi Pro Course” series started in November 2012. It didn’t take long after the start of the application period for the background drawing and story making courses to fill up. After such a favorable reception, they are holding the second classes, which cover the more advanced parts of the background drawing course.
This time, the course is going to be a joint sponsorship with ComicSmart, and 70 people will be able to participate, which is two times as many as the last time. Just like last time, the authors of “Jump Square Manga Seminar Manzemi,” Mogura Kitano and Muneo Saito, will be invited as lecturers.
The first and the second term consists of six lessons altogether, and the lessons aim for systematic understanding of the basics of backgrounds. The objective is to be able to draw straight line inorganic objects such as buildings and schools at the level of a pro’s assistant.
In addition, the aim of the course to help students acquire more techniques, such as improving their overall skill by learning the application method of rough sketches of the human body, for instance. This course is for people who are aiming to be a pro and are submitting their works to publishers, as well as people who are aware that they find backgrounds difficult when drawing manga.
The course will run from May 12 to June 30, with each lesson being held from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. every Sunday. The target group is aspiring manga artist, but beginners who would like to learn about backgrounds from the basics are also welcome. The lessons are going to be held in Shinjuku, Tokyo, in ComicSmart’s seminar room.
The two terms together cost 17,000 yen, and one term costs 9,800 yen (tax included). Participants are required to bring writing utensils and rulers (if possible, a set of two triangles). Applications are being accepted through the website.
