Since it’s launch in 2009, Crunchyroll, an internet-based video distribution company that brings Japanese anime to overseas audiences, has surpassed 200,000 premium subscribers. Reaching this number in only four years since the service started is a great achievement, especially considering that the company went from 100,000 subscribers in 2012 to over 200,000 in only half a year. Its momentum seems nigh unstoppable.
The cause of Crunchyroll’s success is thought to be due to the positive impact that the diversification of distribution services has made. In addition to its internet and PC service, Crunchyroll recently developed an app aimed at iPhone, iPad, Android, and smartphone users. Furthermore, in an attempt to further widen its user base, Crunchyroll is also utilizing game consoles such as the PS3 in its service, which is thought to be playing a big role in its rapidly growing user base. Another big factor is its expansion to set-top boxes, which further magnifies its accessibility to users.
In 2012, the company also began translating their content into Spanish and Portuguese and the service was introduced to Europe and South America. In addition to its distribution service, the company has also launched an ecommerce platform.
