“Hal,” More than Just a Story of Girl and a Robot, to Release in Theaters This June

The theatrical film Hal will release in theaters throughout Japan on June 8, 2013. Ryotaro Makihara, who worked on Guilty Crown and The Tatami Galaxy, is directing the film. Izumi Kizara, who has worked on Japanese drama masterpieces, is in charge of the screenplay. Manga artist Io Sakisaka, known for creating Strobe Edge and Ao Haru Ride, is in charge of character design.

The film’s main cast has been gathering much attention and includes the popular voice stars Yoshimasa Hosoya as Hal and Yoko Hikasa as Kurumi. Hikasa is also performing the film’s theme song “Owaranai Uta” as Kurumi, a fact that has also created a lot of talk amongst fans.

Special pages have been added to the official site, including the “Kumo Goods Shop” page and “Betsuma Premium” page. “Kumo Goods Shop” is named after the store that Kurumi opens in the film. It features an episode between the bear, lion, and giraffe stuffed animals that appear in the film as they talk with each other and share secrets about the film that can’t be heard anywhere else. It’s a definite must watch for fans. On “Betsuma Premium,” fans can watch a special video of Yoshimasa Hosoya commenting on the film. Fans can also see the start of the manga adaptation of Hal in the April issue of Bessatsu Margaret.

Hal is a love story between a human and a robot set in Kyoto in the near future. It follows the story of Kurumi losing her beloved Hal in an accident and her interactions with a robot version of Hal that is sent to her as his replacement.
