On March 8, the 36th Japan Academy Prize, the biggest award ceremony in the world of Japanese films, was held at the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa. At the ceremony, Mamoru Hosoda’s Wolf Children won the award for Animation of the Year. This was Hosoda’s third Japan Academy Prize, with the first two being for 2006’s The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and 2009’s Summer Wars.
Other films nominated in this category included Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, A Letter to Momo, Friends: Naki on the Monster Island, and One Piece Film Z, all of which received the Award of Excellence, including Wolf Children. The animation category is a new category that was established in 2006, and to date, only seven films have won the award for Animation of the Year. Out of those seven, three were films by Hosoda, who has become an influential director in the world of Japanese films.
Aside from winning Animation of the Year at this year’s Japan Academy Prize, Wolf Children has also won the Animation Film Award at the 67th Mainichi Film Awards and the award for Best Animated Feature Film at the 2012 Sitges Film Festival. Even overseas, it has received high praise.
