Asahikawa Winter Festival Features Huge Transformer Snow Sculpture

The Asahikawa Winter Festival was held in Hokkaido from Feb. 6-11, 2013. The event’s popularity was just behind that of the Sapporo Snow Festival, boasting an attendance rate of one million visitors. This year marked the popular festival’s 54th anniversary.

At this year’s Asahikawa Winter Festival, a gigantic Transformer snow sculpture was revealed. It was 20 meters high, 130 meters wide, and 40 meters deep. The sculpture included what can be referred to as an “ice and snow park” with an ice slide, outlook terrace, and more.

The sculpture was based on the anime Transformers: Prime and chiseled to represent the main character, Optimus Prime. Construction of the sculpture began on Jan. 4 under the supervision of Takara Tomy and took approximately 250 workers one month to complete. The design was even more impressive than last year’s.
