Tamako Market, Kyoto Animation’s newest anime, began airing in early January. If you are wondering why the anime looks strikingly like K-On! it’s because many of the staff who worked on K-On!, including director Naoko Yamada, series composer Reiko Yoshida, and character designer Yukiko Horiguchi, are also working on Tamako Market. The anime is a comedy about the main character Tamako, who is the daughter of a mochi maker, who one day comes across a talking bird.
Aside from Aya Suzaki as Tamako, the rest of the main cast includes Rina Hidaka as Tamako’s little sister Anko, Atsushi Tamaru as Tamako’s childhood friend Mochizo, Yurie Yamashita as Tamako’s classmate Shiori, as well as Juri Nagatsuma and Yuki Kaneko as Tamako’s friends Kanna and Midori respectively. Other than Hidaka, who began acting as a child, the main cast primarily consists of fresh talent.
Before the anime began airing, an event that consisted of a special screening of the first episode and a talk panel with the cast, called “TV Anime Tamako Market Mochi Mochi Advance Screening Event”, was held at the Museum of Kyoto. In attendance were the director Naoko Yamada, as well as cast members Suzaki, Nagatsuma, and Kaneko, who appeared together for the first time.
