The first run of The Touhou Project collaboration glasses “TOHO MEGANE” went on sale Jan. 5, 2013. The two models are themed after Reimu and witch Marisa. Nabeshima Tetsuhiro, in charge of the character’s illustrations and the glasses’ design, is enthusiastic about having created them without any compromises to the final product. The idea was sparked from the doujinshi “Touhou MEGANE”. After acquiring Team Shanghai Alice’s consent, the company Butler Optical Shop eye mirror began planning the project.
Since the product was developed without appropriate existing frames, a blueprint was first created. Both glasses have a laser seal design located at the end of the glasses where they are placed behind the ears. The Reimu model is decorated with a ribbon pattern and the Marisa model features a pentagram. Each character’s name is beautifully painted on the inside their respective glasses case. An original glasses cleaner set is also included. Each set sold for 13,650 yen.
Since the first run of the Reimu and Marisa glasses were limited to 200 serial codes each, they unfortunately have already sold out. However, due to their great popularity, a re-release was announced on Jan. 8! The glasses will be re-released this spring.
Fans of Touhou and glasses enthusiasts alike, should definitely add these to their collection! They are functional, fashionable, and would even look great simply displayed amongst a figure collection.
