Sasami is a shut-in. Whether it’s changing her clothes or eating, she is unmotivated in everything she does. What’s more, she is doted on every day by her older brother. Using a tool on her computer called “Brother Surveillance Tool”, Sasami is able to view the outside world whenever her older brother goes to school. On Valentine’s Day, Sasami gives chocolate to her older brother, feigning that it is just his lunch. After this, the two become entangled in a “tragic event”.

Sasami-san@Ganbaranai is another unique work by director Akiyuki Shinbo, who also worked on Bakemonogatari and Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Even from the anime’s opening, Shinbo’s vivid animation style can be seen. Sasami needs help from her older brother for everything, including eating, brushing her teeth, and taking a bath. The work is also full of subtle jokes and parodies, such as the scene where Sasami is changing, which is a parody of The Castle of Cagliostro.
The story continues without a clear explanation of Sasami’s older brother, whose face is always hidden, or the three sisters, who turn the entire world into chocolate. Just when you think that the story is a slice of life love comedy between two siblings, it takes an intense turn toward the paranormal. Such a plot twist is sure to have fans saying, “I would expect no less from one of Shinbo’s works!”
