In 2012, the Tales of series celebrated its 17th anniversary since the release of the first game in the series, Tales of Phantasia in 1995. It may be amazing to realize, but including the newest game in the series, Tales of Xillia 2, the series comprises 14 major titles and over 40 remakes and spinoffs. Even with such a large library of titles, the newest game has still managed to sell more than 500,000 copies. The series is firmly-rooted among Japanese gamers, even being called the national RPG of Japan.
However, the series isn’t only popular in Japan. In fact, it has seen extraordinary success overseas as well, with a great number of titles becoming huge hits. As evidence of its tremendous success worldwide, on Dec. 4, 2012, it was announced that the total number of worldwide copies shipped exceeded 15 million. This is such an incredible amount of games that it may be difficult to imagine, but this is the extraordinary popularity of the series.
The series isn’t just resting on its popularity though. A new game, titled Tales of Hearts 2, is set to launch for the PS Vita in 2013. Furthermore, the series’ creators are vigorously aiming at breaking the 20 million mark in total sales by the series’ 20th anniversary. As the representative RPG of Japan, Tales of is sure to gather even more fan support not just from Japanese gamers, but from gamers worldwide.
