Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo Still Dominating at the Box Office

Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, also known as Eva Q, was released country-wide in Japan on Nov. 17, 2012. In just two days after its release, its box office earnings were 1,131,004,600 yen and total tickets sold was 771,764. The movie has received the highest earnings for opening weekend of any movie released in Japan this year.

Theaters throughout Tokyo have been doing very well thanks to Eva Q’s momentum, which doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Theaters continue to be sold out even during weekdays. Just four days after its release, ticket sales broke through the 1 million mark to 1,103,443. Box offices earnings also climbed on the fourth day, reaching 1,581,121,800 yen.

With these numbers, when compared to the final box office total of 4 billion yen for the previous Evangelion movie, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, Eva Q’s earnings so far are huge. Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance opened in Japan on June 27, 2009, and in its first weekend, made 512,989,000 yen. Comparatively, Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone made 280,424,200 yen on its opening weekend and went on to make 2 billion yen at the box office. It seems to be that as the series progresses, it’s getting exponentially more popular.

Even when compared to other big hit anime films, such as One Piece Film: Strong World, which was released on Dec. 12, 2009, made 4.8 billion yen at the box office, and had a weekend earning of 1,039,214,800 yen, and Ponyo, which was released on July 19, 2008, made 15.5 billion yen at the box office, and had a weekend earning of 1,024,880,555 yen, the sheer power of Eva Q can be seen.
