ShiftyLook, which may be familiar to TokyoOtakuMode users, has launched in Japan! ShiftyLook originally launched in March 2012 with the vision to “repower retro”. As a part of NAMCO BANDAI Games Inc., ShiftyLook gives new life to popular classic video game characters from the 1980s - 2000s through webcomics.
ShiftyLook currently distributes webcomics that are created with the help of well-known writers and illustrators of overseas comics. Some of the popular characters they have already created webcomics for include Bravoman, Wonder Momo, Klonoa, and Katamari. Fifteen of the English-version comics are currently being translated into Japanese.
TokyoOtakuMode recently attended ShiftyLook’s Japan launch party in Tokyo. We spoke with the creators of ShiftyLook, who all said, “We love Japanese games!” As for writing the comics, they said, “We don’t want to destroy the world of the characters, but rather we want to give the characters a new voice and present their world in a new way; we are very careful about this.” The event featured impromptu illustrations by ShiftyLook’s talented artists, special cocktail drinks based on the popular characters Wonder Momo and Bravoman, and classic 8-bit game music played by a Chip Music DJ team and Namco Sounds. The event was very exciting!
