Snake, or Solid Snake, is the protagonist of the Metal Gear series of video games created by Hideo Kojima and developed by Konami. His real name is David though he has also gone by Old Snake and Iroquois Plisken. A former green beret and special operations soldier, Snake is now a mercenary fluent in six languages and with an IQ of 180. Using his extreme talent for stealth tactics, Snake is often sent up against Metal Gear - bipedal mecha equipped with nuclear weapons.
In the first game, Metal Gear released in 1987, Snake is a rookie recruit to the FOXHOUND elite special forces unit and is sent by Big Boss into the rogue nation Outer Heaven to rescue teammate Gray Fox whilst also investigating Metal Gear, though his mission continues to expand throughout the Metal Gear series.
