Your Guide to Hannari Tofu
Have you ever dwelled on the thought that tofu is just so smooth and soft that it’s almost… cute? That’s right. You know for a fact that Japan can make anything kawaii, and that includes tofu!
Hannari Tofu is an adorable series of tofu characters with tons of merchandise available in Japan from the company Passport, and worldwide through the TOM Premium Shop! “Hannari” means elegant, or quietly beautiful, in the Kansai dialect of Japanese, and the Hannari Tofu characters indeed come in quite the refined flavors, each with a pleasant smile to top it off, too!
Characters
The characters in the Hannari Tofu series are, as the official website suggests, handmade tofu in various elegant and distinctly Japanese flavors. Each tofu character is a block of tofu in a different flavor, with a cute little accessory at the side of its head, a smiling expression with pink blush on its cheeks, and tiny little arms and legs. One other unlikely character has made its way into the series as well, though!
Yaki Tofu
“Yaki Tofu” means grilled tofu, and indeed, you’ll find that the top of Yaki Tofu comes in a nice yellow color with brown grill marks! Yaki Tofu also comes with a cute slice of carrot cut into the shape of a flower as an accessory to match!
The official site says: “The highly popular specialty tofu, grilled to a nicely browned color.”
Ume Tofu
“Ume” is a small, sour Japanese plum used in many Japanese dishes. Ume Tofu is a block of tofu flavored with ume, hence the soft pink color, and comes with a plum blossom as an accessory!
The official site says: “Ume extract has the effect of revitalizing your body when you are tired.”
Matcha Tofu
“Matcha” is a type of powdered green tea, finely milled from tencha leaves. Matcha Tofu is a block of tofu flavored with matcha to form a gentle green, and comes with green tea leaves as an accessory!
The official site says: “The harmony between bitter matcha and soybeans produces a profound flavor for adults.”
Yuzu Tofu
“Yuzu” is a citrus fruit from East Asia, resembling a yellow tangerine in appearance and a lemon in flavor, and is often used for flavoring in Japanese dishes. Yuzu Tofu is a yuzu-flavored tofu, and is a light yellow color with a small yuzu as an accessory!
The official site says: “Enjoy your tofu with the faint fragrance of yuzu.”
Goma Tofu
“Goma” means sesame in Japanese. Goma Tofu is a block of tofu flavored with black sesame to form a light gray color. Goma Tofu is the only one in the Hannari Tofu series with cute little freckles, and comes with a black sesame seed as an accessory!
The official site says: “Its charm is in the fragrance filled with the nutrition of sesame seeds.”
Suzume
“Suzume” means sparrow in Japanese. Oddly enough, this little sparrow has made its way into the Hannari Tofu series! We’re not quite sure how, but Suzume sure is cute!
The official site says: “Just your ordinary sparrow.”
Merchandise
The characters of the Hannari Tofu series have been made into various soft, fluffy, and blocky items, from cushions to box stools. The classic Hannari Tofu item is the premium “Tofu Cushion,” featuring the tofu characters as soft, fluffy, block-shaped plushies! Tofu Cushions come in three sizes, S, M, and L, to suit all your cushioning needs, and also look irresistibly cute stacked on top of one another! The small one also comes with a ball chain at the top so that you can attach it to your bag, keys, or elsewhere as an accessory!
Also part of the classic collection is the “Tenori” or “palm-sized” Hannari Tofu series. Even smaller than the S size, these tiny tofu plushies sit adorably in the palm of your hand, smiling up at you always. They’re great for brightening up any room, desk, or shelf with some positivity and kawaii! On the other hand, the body pillow series consists of plushies even larger than the large size, and works great as that extra pillow you use to hug when you sleep, or a cushion for extra support when you read!
The Hannari Tofu series has more functional items as well! The tofu characters have been made into adorable coin pouches for you to store your spare change in fluffy tofu style. They’ve also been made into adorable box stools, which you can not only store items in, but also sit on! They also have mini tote bags, perfect for when you just need a place to store your phone and cash on a short trip to the supermarket. Whatever the occasion, the Hannari Tofu bunch are happy to be by your side!
