Fate/stay night is the original Type-Moon visual novel which kickstarted the entire Fate franchise. Followed by sequel Fate/hollow ataraxia and prequel Fate/Zero, Fate/stay night was also adapted into a smash hit TV anime series by Studio Deen in 2006.

Focusing on the Fifth Holy Grail War, Fate/stay night revolves around the story of teenager Shiro Emiya who was taken in by former Magus Kiritsugu Emiya. After being chased and almost killed by Lancer, Shiro is introduced to his Servant Saber, meaning Shiro is now an official Master and participant in the Holy Grail War.

The Holy Grail War itself is fought between seven sorcerers known as Masters and their Servants which are each reincarnations of historical heroes who possess powerful artifacts known as Noble Phantasms.

Before Saber appears, Shiro is also saved by Master of Archer, Rin Tohsaka, whose sister Sakura Mato has a crush on him. At this point the story branches into several different routes including Fate, Unlimited Blade Works, and Heaven’s Feel.
