Captain America is one of the best known superheroes of the Marvel universe. Created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby back in 1941, Captain America was designed as a patriotic figure who fought the Axis powers during World War II but after the end of the war his popularity began to wane a little.
The alter ego of Steve Rogers—previously a weedy, physically weak young man—Captain America was created through the use of a serum developed by the US Government designed to help generate better frontline soldiers for the war effort and is most often costumed in the red, white, and blue patriotic colors with a large white star on his round Vibranium shield inspired by the American flag.
Since being revived in the 1960s, Captain America has continued to be one of Marvel’s best known comic book characters, branching out into other media from Saturday morning cartoons to radio serials and movies. Most recently he has become a vital part of Marvel’s cinematic output with Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Captain America: Civil War becoming big box office hits each starring Chris Evans as the titular hero who also appears as an integral member of the Avengers group in the movies The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
