This unusual collaboration between the Ukiyo-e Project and the rock band KISS aims to save ukiyo-e, the traditional Japanese art of woodblock printing, from disappearing from our world by giving work to the artisans involved in the creation process: Illustrators, wood carvers, and hand printers.
Illustrated by Masumi Ishikawa, carved by Kazuo Watanabe, and hand-printed by Hideo Yoshida on a piece of 18.9” long and 13.4” wide, high-quality, hand-made Japanese paper (washi), it features all four members of KISS wearing kimonos with a light touch of mica shine on the grey areas with a different color undershirt symbolizing each member. Their lighter-than-real-life makeup color comes from kumadori makeup seen in kabuki plays.
You can choose to have a version signed by the band members or without a signature. In any case, this amazing piece is helping save this elaborate art form!
