5 Centimeters per Second is an award-winning animated feature film by popular animation director Makoto Shinkai, who has been hailed as “the new Miyazaki.” Consisting of three acts entitled “Cherry Blossom,” “Cosmonaut,” and “5 Centimeters per Second,” each act follows a boy named Takaki Touno and his bond with a girl as he ages from an elementary school child in the 1990s to an adult in present day Japan. Centering on the story of a special past love, the film presents the struggle against time, space, people, and love in an almost dream-like perspective. The poignantly beautiful piece has garnered many awards, including the 2007 award for Best Animated Feature Film at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards and is sure to be a winner among your DVD collection as well!
