Recently, the most anticipated news revolves around the highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII Remake, however a great variety of updates regarding other titles are constantly being posted. For example, the Square Enix official Final Fantasy news website has a page about Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia that recently announced new content, promotions, characters, costumes, and quests available for a limited time on the mobile game. Many other news updates concern patches to several of their releases and the unveiling of various merchandise like plushes, character stickers, acrylic stands, pins, and jewelry.

News About the Final Fantasy VII Remake

The Final Fantasy VII Remake is an upcoming reimagining of Final Fantasy VII, the seventh major title of the flagship series, Final Fantasy. The original game was released on the Sony PlayStation in 1997 and became one of the most successful and influential games of the series. The remake is set for release on the PlayStation 4 on April 10th, 2020 and will bring back some of the series’ most iconic characters, including Cloud Strife, Tifa Lockhart with significantly improved designs and graphics. While staying true to the original plot, the remake will introduce new combat systems and gameplay. While the first release will only cover the first section of the original game, the rest of the game is planned to be released in several releases in the future. Producer Yoshinori Kitase previously stated that he was unsure how many games the remake will spawn. Recently, a leaked demo of the game has surfaced on the internet due to data mining. Fans searching through material have uncovered some potential spoilers that Square Enix did not intend on releasing publically.

Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia Update

Dissidia Final Fantasy is a mobile game that acts as a successor to the Dissidia Final Fantasy, which began on the PlayStation Portable. For the second anniversary of Opera Omnia, a variety of new content and promotions were announced, including new characters, quests, story content, log-in bonuses, sales, and visuals. Throughout the entire promotional period, players will receive double the amount of rewards for cycle quest rewards. Two new characters are mentioned in this update: Aranea and Ignis, who both come from Final Fantasy XV. This special promotional content is only available until March 2nd, 2020.

Final Fantasy XIV Patch and 2020/2021 Fan Festival

Square Enix’s MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV is set to receive a patch that will add an incredible amount of new content and was announced on February 6th, 2020. This patch is given the name “Echoes of a Fallen Star” and is set to launch on February 18th. The update will build on the MMORPG’s third and most recent expansion, Shadowbringers, and include new story missions, raids, dungeons, a new fishing area, and re-balanced mechanics. With this news, dates for the next Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festivals were announced as well. Three locations were chosen to host this year’s event: San Diego, USA (November 6th and 7th, 2020), Nagoya, Japan (December 19th and 20th, 2020), and London, England (February 20th and 21st, 2021).

Merchandise Announcements

Many news articles found on Square Enix’s official Final Fantasy news website lists an amazing variety of different kinds of merchandise. Such merchandise can include plushes, jewelry, pins, keychains, and much, much more. The following is a small list of recent merchandise announced by Square Enix:

  • Chocobo and Moogle Plush Toys: Although many different plushes have already been released by Square Enix, they have announced new “Fluffy Fluffy” plush toys of their iconic Moogle and Chocobo characters. These plush toys are made with fleece, making them incredibly soft and cuddly. Each plush is currently available for pre-order through Square Enix’s official store for approximately $29.99. The plush toys are currently expected to release in June 2020.

  • Jumbo Tonberry and Cactuar Plushes: Two recurring enemies in the Final Fantasy series are also getting plush toys of their own as well, and they are quite large as well. The Cactuar plush is supposed to be a 1/1 size replica of the actual enemy as it will appear in the Final Fantasy VII Remake. It is available for pre-order for $99.99 and will launch in February 2020. On the other hand, the Tonberry stands at just over eighteen inches tall and can be pre-ordered for $179.99. It is set to be released in July 2020.

  • Chocobo and Bomb Silver Necklaces: On January 28th, 2020, two different silver necklaces were announced and can now be pre-ordered. These necklaces are recreations of the charms that Tifa Lockheart wear in the Final Fantasy VII Remake. One necklace features a Chocobo pendant while the other features a Bomb, a recurring enemy in the Final Fantasy franchise. Both necklaces will cost $147.99 and are currently expected to be released in June 2020.
