Shinkai Makoto’s The Place Promised in Our Early Days Coming to the Stage!

Shinkai Makoto’s Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku no Basho ( The Place Promised in Our Early Days ) is making its first appearance on stage!

Shinkai is a prominent figure in the animation industry, most recently for the film Kimi no Na wa., and this stage adaptation of his first feature film is sure to attract a lot of attention.

Set in Aomori prefecture after the Separation of Japan when the country was divided into northern and southern parts, the story follows 3 middle school students: Hiroki, Takuya, and Sayuri. They’re fascinated with a mysterious tower on Ezo (Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan) which is controlled by the Union (referring to the Soviet Union). After stumbling upon a crashed plane, they attempt to rebuild it with the intention of eventually using it to fly over to the tower, but an unfortunate turn of events stops them.

The live action adaptation will star Tatsumi Yudai, Takada Shou, and Itou Momoka. The supporting cast is also set to include Matsuzawa Kazuyuki, Kozuki Wataru, and Asano Atsuko.

The play will run in Tokyo between April 20-24, and then move on to Osaka for two shows on May 2.
