Touken Danshi Protect What’s Important to Them in New Musical “Mitohose no Komori Uta”

5 new Touken Danshi will be added into the mix when the curtains rise on a new battle.

Musical Touken Ranbu ~Mitohose no Komori Uta~ opened at AiiA 2.5 Theater Tokyo on Mar. 4, and a mysteriously veiled new unit also made an appearance.

The Touken Danshi Arrive!

6 of the performing Touken Danshi and the director Kayano Isamu appeared before the costume rehearsal.

Sakiyama Tsubasa will be playing Ishikirimaru, and he said about the relationship of the cast, “We just started practicing one month ago, and it’s already time for the costume rehearsal. All of the ensemble, including the new members of the Touken Danshi, have come together as one to make the Touken Ranbu musical.”

Each actor was asked about a highlight of the show, and Sakiyama responded first saying, “You get to see Ishikirimaru’s human kindness grow through his exchanges with Tokugawa Ieyasu and the others.” Araki Hirofumi (who plays Nikkari Aoe) responded right after saying, “Our growth as swords.”

Ooto Motohiro, the actor behind Sengo Muramasa, responded with a character-appropriate romantic smile, “I’m known as the bewitching blade, and my character has that certain charming quality that other characters don’t have, and I hope I’m able to bring out that bewitching atmosphere.”

Tonbokiri, the only person who understands Sengo Muramasa, is being played by spi who commented, “I think my character’s connection to Muramasa is a highlight.”

This will be actor Yokota Ryugi’s first role in a 2.5-dimensional musical as Monoyoshi Sadamune, and he answered the prompt saying, ”There’s a lot of powerful, human emotions, and I hope that the audience will sympathize with those and enjoy it.”

Ookurikara is being played by Zaiki Takuma who also let a bit of the coolness of his character shine through as he said, “My character is extremely cool. He doesn’t show a lot of feeling through facial expressions, so I hope I’m able to express what he’s feeling through movements and my eyes.”

Touken Danshi Raising a Baby Tokugawa Ieyasu!?

Curtains finally rose to reveal Musical Touken Ranbu ~Mitohose no Komori Uta~. The story is set during the 11th year of the Tembun era in the middle of the warring states period as the Touken Danshi try to fight against historical revisionism, and many military commanders appear.

6 Touken Danshi protect a single baby with Ishikirimaru as their leader, and it’s revealed that the baby is Tokugawa Ieyasu, the famous general who goes on to put an end to the wars.

His parents are killed by a historical revisionist which has a chance of changing the course of history. To keep this from happening, the Touken Danshi raise the baby.

Just as director Kayano Isamu had said, this is a magnificent drama about the life of Ieyasu. It follows his growth from a baby into a fearless young man as the 6 Touken Danshi watch over him from a distance.

In keeping with this, you get to see a lot of the characters’ softer sides while they’re not fighting. This includes Nikkari Aoe pushing a baby carriage, Tonbokiri carrying him on his back, and other charming moments.

Not everyone is as close to the baby, though, with the mysterious Sengo Muramasa and independent Ookurikara watching from a distance as they focus on other things.

Still, as time continues to pass, all of the Touken Danshi change, and this is especially true of the aloof Ookurikara. He asks Meigo, a farmer, to teach him fencing, and Meigo, who lost his family to war, is inspired.

Through the support of Ishikirimaru and the others, Tokugawa Ieyasu grows up well and has a son of his own named Matsudaira Nobuyasu. The Touken Danshi teach Nobuyasu different subjects and fencing and become paternal figures to him.

History is cruel, though, and according to history, Ieyasu commanded his son Nobuyasu to commit suicide. As for why, even the Tokugawa house’s beloved sword Monoyoshi Sadamune isn’t sure. Could the Touken Danshi, who had looked after Nobuyasu as if he was their own son, watch him commit suicide before their very own eyes? As the others worry about the decision, Ishikirimaru returns to Nobuyasu.

This cruel fate shakes the resolve of the Touken Danshi. They raised and loved both Ieyasu and Nobuyasu as their own sons, and are torn between their feelings and their mission. What will they choose for Nobuyasu, their comrades, and their mission?

Oota Motohiro also has a huge impact on the crowd as Sengo Muramasa, and you can’t miss out on seeing spi’s bright personality as Tonbokiri. Seeing Tonbokiri carry a little Nobuyasu on his back is also heartwarming.

Sakiyama Tsubasa’s strength in his composure, Araki Hirofumi’s arrogant grin, Yokota Ryugi’s glory, and Zaiki Takuma’s lone wolf style are also all worth seeing in addition to Washio Noboru’s performance as Ieyasu and Ono Mizuki’s performance as Nobuyasu.

Following this story and a 15-minute intermission is a familiar live performance. We won’t spoil it for you, but it features some great staging with the Touken Danshi, and it’s packed with enthusiasm, so bring some kind of light!

Musical Touken Ranbu ~Mitohose no Komori Uta~ is being performed at AiiA 2.5 Theater Tokyo from Mar. 4-26. It’ll then move on to Osaka (Umeda Arts Theater Main Hall) from Apr. 1-9, and then finally returns to Tokyo for shows from Apr. 14-23.

Don’t miss out on seeing the 6 Touken Danshi as they protect what’s important to them.
