Kochikame Manga Sets Guinness World Record

Kochikame Manga Sets Guinness World Record

Sept. 17 marks the release date of the 200th and final volume of Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Koen Mae Hashutsujo, or Kochikame. With this volume, it’s also been awarded a Guinness World Record for the most volumes published for a single manga series.

This comedy is written by Akimoto Osamu and began in Weekly Shonen Jump in Sept. 1976. Over these 40 years, people have come to know and love its ridiculous cast, and many were heartbroken to hear from Akimoto at the 40th anniversary commemorative event that it will be ending with the 200th volume.

Despite how sad it is, though, this 200th volume should be celebrated, and the Guinness World Record makes that even more exciting. After 40 years of serialization, Kochikame will earn the record for most volumes published for a single manga series, and the official certificate will be awarded at the Kochikame Exhibit on Sept. 14. More details about the ceremony were included in the 41st Weekly Shonen Jump issue released on Sept. 12.

There’s no better way for Kochikame to come to a close than this award, and to protagonist Ryotsu Kankichi, nothing better to say than “bravo”.
