D.Gray-man is a popular manga by Katsura Hoshino. It has found a great fanbase for its dark fantasy style. The series is a smash hit with over 22.5 million total copies in print. Its serialization was just recently restarted as one of the featured series in the new magazine Jump SQ.Crown which began being published this July. It’s safe to say the new anime series will likely be linked with the manga.
D.Gray-man is set in a fictional late 19th century world. There exists weapons of destruction called Akuma, demons given bodily form. The Noah Family is plotting the world’s demise and can create Akuma, and the only ones with the ability to destroy Akuma are Exorcists. The series’ main character is Allen Walker, voiced by Ayumu Murase, a unique Exorcist with the ability to detect disguised Akuma. He tries to protect both Akuma and humans. And then there’s Howard Link, voiced by Shinnosuke Tachibana, an inspector of Order's Central Office who is sent to monitor Allen. The battle wages on with a mix of other characters including Second Exorcist Yu Kanda and Lavi, who is training to become a Bookman, someone who records the hidden history of the world.
The series was adapted into an anime in 2006 and broadcast as a TV Tokyo series. It gained popularity and had a long run with 103 episodes in total. It’s been 10 years since then, and anticipation is raising over what kind of D.Gray-man will come out of this new anime project.
With much still to be revealed, the anime’s official site and Twitter were launched on Dec. 20. There will be more new information to come.
