Mechanical designer Kunio Okawara’s “Ex Machina” is grabbing everyone’s attention. The Ex Machina is an electric car and a product of Okawara who has worked on things like anime.
Of course, this is Okawara, who’s full of ideas. The vehicle comes with arms, can fold, and even rotates, so this unreal car really seems like a mecha from an anime brought into reality.
The Ex Machina began as a project to bring automotive and IT-related manufacturing industries to Niigata Prefecture. It’s aiming to establish unusual electric automobile brands outside of Niigata, and to help with revitalization through the production of those parts. For this project, Okawara, who has worked on things like Mobile Suit Gundam, Armored Trooper Votoms, and Yatterman was singled out. A futuristic device materialized.
That project, with an anime-like car that might eventually become an anime, has now begun.
Crowdfunding to turn the Ex Machina into an anime has started. The crowdfunding is calling for assistance in covering the expenses to make an anime pilot. There’s a wide variety of rewards for supporters including Ex Machina development materials, being able to test drive the electric car the anime is based on, or being a part in the credits for the short pilot anime.
About the project to turn it into an anime, Okawara made the following comment: “Before now, I had only ever designed for anime, so I’m really happy to have been a part of a genuine mecha design,” and he called to fans, saying, “The Ex Machina is a toy-like vehicle that the generation raised on anime is sure to want. Please help make the Ex Machina an anime!” He also said, “I’m very grateful for Japan’s regulations, because this is something that would have been impossible until now,” and also expressed his thoughts about the Ex Machina. There is currently a “Mechanical Designer Kunio Okawara” exhibit in progress at Tokyo’s Ueno Royal Museum.
