“Setoutsumi” Live-Action Film Greenlit; Sosuke Ikematsu and Masaki Suda Star as Double Leads

A live-action film adaptation has been greenlit for the popular manga Setoutsumi about two high school boys from Kansai who get together after school and chat. Young, talented actors Sosuke Ikematsu and Masaki Suda will star as the main leads, and directing the film is Tatsushi Omori of Tada’s Do-It-All House and The Ravine of Goodbye fame. The film is slated for a 2016 release.

Setoutsumi is based on a manga by Kazuya Konomoto currently serialized in Akita Shoten’s Bessatsu Shonen Champion. The unusual series focuses on the cool, cynical after school discussions between Kansai high school boys Seto and Utsumi. The series has witty dialogue, superb humor, and sense of “space,” and the interesting conversations alone are enough to capture readers’ attention. It is highly praised as well, having been nominated for such awards as the 18th Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize in Literature.

Taking on the world of Japanese cinema in this live-action film is a cast of young actors. Playing Utsumi, a student attending cram school, is Sosuke Ikematsu who has appeared in Pale Moon, Undulant Fever, and Love’s Whirlpool, among others, and who won the Kinema Junpo Award for Best Male Co-Star for his work in Our Family. Playing former soccer club member Seto is Masaki Suda who has starred in such popular works as the NHK TV drama series Gochisousan and Assassination Classroom and who won the Japan Academy Prize for Newcomer of the Year for his work on The Backwater.

Fans are sure to be happy about the casting of these two truly talented actors for the lead roles. A point to look forward to is what kind of dialogue we’ll hear between these two double lead characters who talk in a Kansai dialect.

Directing the film is Tatsushi Omori who won the Special Judge’s Prize at the Moscow International Film Festival for The Ravine of Goodbye. Having also directed the quintessential buddy movie Tada’s Do-It-All House, Omori’s abilities will likely be on full show here as well. Filming will begin this fall and it will be released in Japan in 2016.

Sosuke Ikematsu (Utsumi):
“With director Omori and Suda together on this strangely interesting series, I get a feeling that this is the beginning of something intriguing. Since we haven’t yet started filming I don’t know what kind of movie it will end up being, but it will surely be interesting, so please look forward to it.”

Masaki Suda (Seto):
“I am grateful from the bottom of my heart to be able to participate on this movie under the guidance of director Omori in which I only talk with Ikematsu. I’m jealous of the cynical exchanges between Seto and Utsumi in the original work. I think they analyze things too much, and such a pairing wouldn’t work in real life. But I want to embody him honestly and pay special attention to the expression and sense of the original work’s world. From there, I want to enjoy life not knowing what will happen next.”

Director Tatsushi Omori:
“I’m excited to see what will come about from Ikematsu and Suda playing through the strangely full-bodied adolescence of [the characters] in Setoutsumi. This isn’t your average movie about adolescence. Please look forward to it!”
