Fruits Basket is a manga that is hugely popular not just in Japan but all over the world. The serialization of Natsuki Takaya’s masterpiece manga Fruits Basket was, to the chagrin of fans, concluded in 2006. But now after nine years, the series is returning.

It has been confirmed that Fruits Basket Another will begin serialization on the webcomic site Hana LaLa Online. A collector’s edition of the manga has also been confirmed for release, and the anime will be rebroadcast on Animax. The series is causing huge waves yet again.

Fruits Basket was serialized from 1998–2006 in Hakusensha’s Hana to Yume. The series became a huge hit with 23 volumes published in total and more than 18.5 million copies in print. The series was also adapted into a 26-episode TV anime that was broadcast in 2001. The anime was directed by Akitaro Daichi and produced by Studio Deen.

Fruits Basket is especially popular overseas. It is even called the biggest hit Japanese shoujo manga in the U.S. Because of this, this news on the new serialization is likely to stir up huge reactions from overseas fans.

Fruits Basket Another will begin being published on Sept. 4. The work will be serialized on Hana LaLa Online, an online shoujo comic site that publishes works from four magazines: Hana to Yume, Bessatsu Hana to Yume, LaLa, and Melody. It will be available to read for free.

The story of Fruits Basket Another will be a sequel to Fruits Basket. It has been revealed that the main character will be a young girl named Sawa.

The first and second volumes of the collector’s edition manga simultaneously in development will be released on Sept. 4. Twelve volumes in total are planned, and one will be published every month. Moreover, all of the front covers of this edition will be exclusive artwork drawn by Natsuki Takaya.

The collector’s edition will be extravagantly put together and will feature all of the color frontispiece artwork published in magazines to date. It will also include messages of thanks written specially for the occasion by Takaya, meaning it’s likely to become a must-have edition for fans.

Concurrently with the manga, the highly popular anime Fruits Basket will be rebroadcast on Animax beginning Sept. 2. One episode will air every Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. An additional broadcast at 7:00 p.m. every Sunday will also begin on Sept. 27. This will be two back-to-back episodes.

This unlikely renewal of Fruits Basket is great news for fans. And because it’s so popular overseas too, it’s likely to gather quite a large buzz. Keep it here for follow-up reports to find out how this develops.
