Box office revenue for Crayon Shin-chan movie breaks series record for first time in 12 years, surpassing 2.22 billion yen.

Crayon Shin-chan: Ora no Hikkoshi Monogatari Saboten Dai Shugeki, (Crayon Shin-chan: My Moving Story! Cactus Large Attack!) which was shown across Japan on 339 screens starting on April 18, 2015, has earned 2,225,385,300 yen in the box office as of June 27. The number of moviegoers is currently 19,004,603. This is according to the distributor, Toho Co. Ltd.

The Crayon Shin-chan movies started in 1993 with Crayon Shin-chan: Akushon Kamen tai Haigure Mao (Crayon Shin-chan: Action Kamen vs Leotard Devil). Over of the past 12 years, the movie with the highest box office numbers was this one at 2.22 billion yen. Crayon Shin-chan: Ora no Hikkoshi Monogatari Saboten Dai Shugeki surpassed the series’ previous record, becoming the new record holder.

The first and second releases in the Crayon Shin-chan movie series both surpassed 2 billion yen, but the 3rd movie, Crayon Shin-chan: Unkokusai no Yabo (Crayon Shin-chan: Unkokusai’s Ambition) and those after it earned between 900 million yen and 1.5 billion yen. 2014’s Crayon Shin-chan: Gachinko! Gyakushu no Robo To-chan (Crayon Shin-chan: Serious Battle! Robot Dad Strikes Back) earned 1.82 billion yen, putting it in third place. It became a widely talked-about and exciting topic among the adult fans of the series. Inheriting that flow in 2015, the numbers continue to grow, with the newest movie being a 124.7% increase compared to Crayon Shin-chan: Gachinko! Gyakushu no Robo To-chan.

Part of the success of Crayon Shin-chan: Ora no Hikkoshi Monogatari Saboten Dai Shugeki is owed to people’s interest in the unusual stage set with the main family moving to Mexico, and the popular artist Yuzu’s theme song. The protagonist is the staple character Shin-chan, and it also seems we’ll grow more familiar with other characters, too. As an anime movie series released regularly, there are plans for 2016 and after, as well.
