An adventure simulation RPG released by Aquaplus and firmly supported by its passionate fan base, that is the Utawarerumono series. Since its release in 2002, the game has been developed across a wide range of media including anime and manga. Currently making headlines is the release confirmation of the sequel Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen announced by Dengeki in April of this year. It will be released on the PS4, PS3, and PS Vita on Sept. 24.
A new surprise for this series that is drawing eyes was announced in the early morning of June 7: Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen is already getting an anime adaptation. The broadcast will begin in October, and it has already been revealed at this time that it will span two seasons (six months). It’s also clear to see that the release schedules for both the game and anime broadcast will be linked. Because both the game and anime will be completely new works, it will be interesting to see how they are both connected.
The story begins with a girl named Kuon who has beast-like ears and a tail appearing before main character Haku, who has lost his memory, and saving him from his fate. Detailed information has not yet been revealed at this time, so it seems interest will build over the mapping of the entire series as well.
In charge of animation production is White Fox. Directing is Keitaro Motonaga of Jormungand, Date A Live, and Digimon Adventure Tri fame, which will likely also be a highlight. The cast has also been announced. Main character Haku will be played by Keiji Fujiwara, Kuon by Risa Taneda, Rurutie by Ai Kakuma, Nekone by Inori Minase, and Ukon by Kentaro Tone—the same voice cast from the games.
To date, a TV anime series and OVA have been produced for the Utawarerumono series. However, the first new works in the series in five years are underway. It’s likely safe to say the game has been just as long awaited as this new anime.
