Legendary author Shotaro Ishinomori’s Cyborg 009 has been loved since it began its manga serialization in Shonen King in 1964 for being a series that crosses over generations. Being the series’ 50th anniversary year this year, it will be brought to fans through a variety of different media.
Now, surprising news for fans has been announced. Production on a new Cyborg 009 anime has been confirmed. With this year being the pivotal 50th anniversary, it seems the aim is to develop the series even further.
When the anime will be released and in what form has not been revealed at this time, but Jun Kawagoe has been announced as the director. Kawagoe also directed the previous TV anime series Cyborg 009: The Cyborg Soldier which broadcast from 2001 to 2002. He is returning to direct the series again after 13 years.
Details on this project will be announced on Ishinomori Web and the official Cyborg 009 site in the coming days. Look forward to information on the staff, cast, and more to come.
Due to Cyborg 009 being so popular, even to date there have been many adaptations. There have been three TV anime adaptations––one in 1966, 1979, and 2001––and four film adaptations. The newest work in the series to date is the 2012 film directed by Kenji Kamiyama titled 009 Re:Cyborg. Through these anime adaptations, the series picked up many fans and became known by a broad audience spanning generations. It seems the series will pick up even more popularity with this new anime.
On the other hand, 2015 will surely be an eventful year for the series. The series had long since been unfinished since author Shotaro Ishinomori’s passing in 1998. However, it was concluded in 2014 through a novel and manga based on concept notes left behind by Ishinomori. The newly announced anime will be the first to come after the series’ conclusion. Therefore, there is interest over what kind of story will be depicted.
