A special video of Sindbad: Sora Tobu Hime to Himitsu no Shima (Sinbad: The Flying Princess and the Secret Island), a theatrical anime made to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Nippon Animation, was released recently. A joint project by Nippon Animation and Shirogumi, it is an original movie set to release in July 2015.
Nippon Animation is most known for producing Chibi Maruko-chan, A Dog of Flanders, and the movies of the World Masterpiece Theater series such as 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother, while Shirogumi is the studio that produced Stand By Me Doraemon and Parasyte. Brimming with such talent, these studios are worthy of keeping an eye on.
Sinbad is one of the stories told in One Thousand and One Nights, a collection of tales still handed down in Arabic countries. Sinbad is the name of the protagonist of the story. There are many adaptations of his adventures and even the name Sinbad (or Sindbad) often appears in manga and anime. In Sinbad: The Flying Princess and the Secret Island, Sinbad dreams of becoming a sailor and traveling to unknown worlds. In the teaser, he is accompanied by a monkey called Mimi and a girl named Sana.
Shinpei Miyashita, known for the storyboard of Chibi Maruko-chan and Doraemon the Movie 2006, was selected for the role of director, while Yoshiharu Sato, who drew many key frames in Ghibli works including My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki’s Delivery Service, is taking on character design and animation direction. Hiroyuki Kawasaki, known for his work on Ronia the Robber’s Daughter, is undertaking series composition.
Director Miyashita commented, “It will be a piece everyone from children to adults can enjoy, a piece that evokes the adventurous heart in people. We are resurrecting the old story of Sinbad with modern animation. Please look forward to it.” As the newest work of Nippon Animation, it will likely be a movie the whole family can watch together.
