An original, full-length animated film to be released this summer has been revealed. The story of Sinbad, a worldwide well-known figure from Arabian Nights, is becoming an anime by Nippon Animation and Shirogumi. The title of the film is Sinbad: Sora Tobu Hime to Himitsu no Shima (Sinbad: The Flying Princess and the Secret Island). Aeon Entertainment is distributing the film, and it will be released countrywide in Japan. The film will be an action-packed adventure enjoyable for the whole family, from kids to adults.
Sinbad depicts the various adventures had on the high seas by Sinbad the Sailor from a story in Arabian Nights that has been well-loved for many years. The book is so loved around the world that it has acquired adaptation after adaptation. It is well known even in Japan where it was adapted into an animated film by Nippon Animation in the ‘70s. Sinbad the Sailor and his monkey pal Mimi dream of traveling to lands unknown, and the story begins when they encounter a young girl named Sana riding a wooden horse in the sky.
Sinbad: Sora Tobu Hime to Himitsu no Shima is being made in celebration of Nippon Animation’s 40th anniversary, and this studio known the world over is challenging itself with this film adaptation along with Shirogumi, which creates VFX and CG. This film is poised to be one of this summer’s biggest hits.
Even the staff gathered to create the animation is splendid. Directing is Shinpei MIyashita from Doraemon the Movie 2006, in charge of animation direction is Yoshiharu Sato who has worked on such masterpieces as My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki’s Delivery Service, and in charge of series composition is Hiroyuki Kawasaki who previously worked on the hugely popular NHK show Ronia the Robber’s Daughter.
At this time, a poster visual drawn just for the occasion has also been released. It conveys the film’s warm mood.
Nippon Animation was founded as an animation studio in 1975 and since then has continued to create masterpieces one after the next based on adolescent literature including A Dog of Flanders, Rascal the Raccoon, and Anne of Green Gables. The studio is also known for Chibi Maruko-chan and Ukkari Penelope.
Shirogumi has created VFX for such films as Always: Sunset on Third Street and also worked on the 2014 smash hit Stand By Me Doraemon. Attention is now on the studio for its collaboration with Nippon Animation.
Comment from the Producers:
“The theme of production on this project is “inheritance,” and, wanting to create a film adaptation that suits today’s generation, we are placing important things that should be inherited and passed through the generations, from parents to children, into this immortal work.”
