A TV anime adaptation has been confirmed for the manga Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju which is currently serializing in Itan (Shueisha). This announcement is made all the merrier by the previously announced new OAD that will be bundled with the seventh volume of the manga. Just how will this story that depicts one comic storyteller’s sincerity and studiousness in the world of Showa comic storytelling be portrayed as an anime? The main cast of the OAD has also been revealed. It seems a highlight will be this wonderful cast, which includes Tomokazu Seki as the main character, performing together.
Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju is a comedy created by Haruko Kumoda. It has a reputation for its subtle human portrayals, and it has already gathered high praise including having won the Award of Excellence in the manga category at the 17th Japan Media Arts Festival and the 38th Kodansha Manga Award for Best General Manga.
The deluxe edition of Volume 7 of the manga to release before the start of the anime broadcast on March 6, 2015 will come bundled with a new OAD titled Yotaro Arc: Part 1. Tomokazu Seki is playing main character Yotaro, a prisoner who falls in love with comic storytelling and volunteers to be an apprentice under Yakumo. Because Seki has played a wide range of characters including Domon Kasshu in Mobile Fighter G Gundam, Shinya Kogami in Psycho-Pass, and Suneo in Doraemon, we can look forward to another spirited performance.
Other cast members include Akira Ishida as Yakumo Yuurakutei, a lone comic storyteller who has spent half his life filled with suffering, and Yuu Kobayashi as Konatsu, a girl whose fate is deeply connected to Yakumo’s. You’ll want to pay attention to the dialogue from this talented cast.
The first key visual of the anime was released in Issue 23 of Itan on sale Dec. 5. Currently, you can only see it in the magazine, so it’s a must-see visual for fans. The second round of cast and staff information will be announced on Feb. 6, 2015 in Issue 24 of Itan. Volume 8 of the manga bundled with the OAD Yotaro Arc: Part 2 will release on Aug. 7, 2015. The official site of the anime will also open soon.

Yotaro can’t forget master Yakumo’s “Grim Reaper” performance that he saw at a comic storytelling recital in prison, and after being discharged, the first place her turns to is the music hall. After being persuaded, Yotaro begins living with Yakumo as his apprentice, but this also means living together with Konatsu, a young girl who also helps Yakumo.
