Introducing the strange creature Totoro from director Hayao Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro, which is popular the world over, as a superior plushie. German stuffed toy maker Steiff, which is known as the creator of the teddy bear, has created a plush toy of Totoro.
The plushie is exclusive to Japan and limited to 1,500, and each one comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity. It is 25 centimeters tall, and the use of high quality alpaca material gives it a quality unique to Steiff’s high quality teddy bears. The Totoro plushie costs 42,000 JPY (tax not included).
Steiff was founded in Germany in 1880 and is famous for creating the world’s first teddy bear. Synonymous with high quality, each and every plush toy is handcrafted by German craftsmen. Limited edition teddy bears come with a certificate of authenticity stamped with a serial number. The company’s trademark button attached to the left ear is also well known. The Totoro plushie also comes with this button-in-ear design.
The variety of stuffed toys Steiff creates doesn’t end with just teddy bears. There are all kinds including dogs, birds, lions, and even deer. The company proactively handles product planning as well. Up till now, there has been a rush of plush toys from animated works including Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Nemo from Finding Nemo, and more.
Recently, a Godzilla plushie created in collaboration between Steiff and Toho to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Godzilla made headlines. Continuing from this is a project Steiff fans in Japan and fans of My Neighbor Totoro will be happy about. Because Totoro is so massively popular, the same will likely be true for this plushie.
