The 27th Tokyo International Film Festival kicked off on Oct. 23. The event, which gathers films and moviegoers from around the world, started with a red carpet event and opening ceremony on the night of the 23 in Roppongi Hills, Tokyo. Among the guests, a young girl in a military look along with a remarkably tall android in combat gear were especially remarkable. These two are Deunan and Briareos from the full-length animated film Appleseed Alpha.
Appleseed Alpha is the talked-about CG animated film by director Shinji Aramaki, a frontrunner of Japanese CG animation, based on Masamune Shirow’s popular manga. The film is a special invitation work of the festival and will be screened on Oct. 28. Because the film is an animation, ordinary film actors were not in attendance. Instead, model Asuka Kishi dressed as Deunan and Briareos walked the red carpet with the film’s producers. The full-impact Appleseed Alpha was hugely popular even on the red carpet.
Nevertheless, what was surprising was how spot-on the characters looked to their film counterparts. Appleseed Alpha aimed for visuals that approach photorealism and push the limits of possibility even among CG animation in terms of its human characters. The characters in the film and the people dressed as them look as if they’re one and the same. We can’t help but think that this is surely proof of the success of the techniques aimed for in the film.
