“Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0” - The Deepening Mystery of the Next Work in the Rebuild of Evangelion Series

On Sept. 5, on the Nippon TV movie program Friday Road Show!, a surprising announcement was made regarding the Rebuild of Evangelion series. Although it was a surprise, the announcement was strange in that it was completely unknown.

Since Aug. 22, Friday Road Show! had been playing for three weeks straight televised versions of the three movies of the Rebuild of Evangelion series: Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, and Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. It was the first time 3.0 had aired on TV before, and the broadcast was filled with highlights including a joint broadcast of Kyoshinhei Tokyo ni Arawaru, which was screened in theaters along with the movie.

Being such a large-scale project, many fans were anticipating the latest news to be given on the series at the end of the broadcast. That announcement came on Sept. 5. Shown on TV screens was the wording “Next Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0.” This same logo was largely displayed in the official site in time with the TV broadcast. However, no details are known as to what this means. For the time being, when the next film in the series will release is still unknown.

Because “3.0 + 1.0” comes last on the official site in a lineup of the three movies released to date, it is conjectured that it will be the next film in the series. However, from the beginning the Rebuild of Evangelion series was meant to be a trilogy. Having a new work that comes after 3.0 would make the series a tetralogy. And this fourth work has been referred to up until now as “New Evangelion the Movie:||.” It is a mystery whether this is a change in the title or a new development entirely.

Another point to consider is the meaning behind “3.0 + 1.0.” Up until now, the “.0” has been used in the English titles of the series. Following from this, it seems possible that the official title of the work will be released next.

Furthermore, when you consider the fact that the titles are denoted the way they are, you also can’t help but consider that maybe it’s not the fourth film after all but a restructuring of 1.0 and 3.0. Or perhaps the fourth film will be a story tied to 3.0 and 1.0? Though the announcement of “Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0” has invited nothing but mystery, it will no doubt bring even more interest to the series.
