Rena Nōnen Challenges Herself by Playing an Otaku Girl in Live Action Princess Jellyfish to Release in December

Akiko Higashimura’s popular shoujo manga Princess Jellyfish is becoming a live-action movie. This news has been trending ever since it was first announced, and now the release date has been decided. The movie will have a countrywide roadshow release by Asmik Ace Entertainment on Dec. 27. It seems this feel-good movie will brighten the year-end season on the big screen. At the same time the release date was announced, a poster visual and information were released. The image of the movie has widened all at once, and anticipation of its year-end release will rise from here on.

The highlight of the now released poster visual and teaser trailer is the surprising casting of Rena Nōnen as main character Tsukimi Kurashita. Tsukimi is a strange role in that she’s a jellyfish otaku girl. From her outer appearance––which consists of a rather plain, makeup-less face, French braids, glasses, and sweats––Tsukimi looks like she has a tactless personality. The quality of her real-life representation is such that it has even received great praise from author Higashimura. She will likely be a highlight of the movie.

The rest of the cast also holds their own. Challenging themselves with this series’ unique roles are talented up-and-coming actor Masaki Suda as a cross-dressing male and Hiroki Hasegawa as an elite male virgin. Other members of the wonderful and unique cast include train otaku Chizuru Ikewaki, Annals of the Three Kingdoms otaku Rina Ota, aemono otaku Azusa Babazono, and curry-lover Tomoe Shinohara.

Aspiring illustrator Tsukimi is an otaku girl who loves jellyfish. She lives in an apartment called Amamizukan that doesn’t allow males. She has fun spending her days as a “nun-like” member of the apartment who has written off men. However, these leisurely days come to an abrupt end when a cross-dressing male and his virgin elite older brother enter the mix. The added crisis of Amamizukan possibly undergoing redevelopment gives rise to chaotic developments.
