The Characters of Wake Up, Girls! Return as Animals - Production Begins on Wake Up, Girl Zoo!

It has been revealed that the popular anime Wake Up, Girls!, which kicked off early this year with the simultaneous release of an animated film along with a TV anime series, will be getting a new development this fall. Production has begun on Wake Up, Girl Zoo!, an original short anime that is a spinoff of the TV anime. A test version of the anime is planned to release on the official site in September.

The Wake Up, Girls! spinoff Wake Up, Girl Zoo! is vastly different than the previous anime. The anime is set in Sendai, but only in a small zoo on the outskirts of town called “Wake Up, Girl Zoo!” The zoo is on the verge of shutting down, and the story begins with director Tange ordering breeder Matsuda to create a new animal unit. Highlights will be the seven animals’ activities and whether they can revive the zoo.

Voicing the main animal characters is the familiar cast who makes up the members of the unit Wake Up, Girls! Each one has become a cutely deformed animal character. Their designs are not to be missed. The main characters are Miyu the falcon (CV: Miyu Takagi), Nanami the fox (CV: Minami Yamashita), Minami the tiger (CV: Minami Tanaka), Mayu the lion (CV: Mayu Yoshioka), Airi the shark (CV: Airi Eino), Kaya the crocodile (CV: Kaya Okuno), and Yoshino the polar bear (CV: Yoshino Aoyama). All of the animals are themed after beasts of prey, but the gap between the animals and members of Wake Up, Girls! gives them a fun edge.

In charge of producing the anime is the Flash anime and manga production creative group Studio Moriken. Directing is Kenshiro Morii, whose speciality is surreal and somewhat loose gags as seen in Attack on Titan Video Special: Chimi Character Theater “Fly! Trainee Corps” and other works.

The official site for the anime opened on Aug. 10, and a key visual along with illustrations of the seven lovely characters have been released. The key visual is a highlight and was drawn using the same composition as the key visual to the animated film.

The theme song, “WUG Zoo Zoo,” will be released as part of the “Wake Up, Girls! Character Song Series,” which will release on seven CDs across four months beginning on Sept. 3, and each version will be paired with a coupling song. Keep an eye on this idol unit that continues to be active even after the conclusion of the TV anime.
