On July 20, the new commercial building of Akihabara Radio Kaikan held its grand opening. After being closed for almost three years since August 2011, the face of Akihabara has returned!
Radio Kaikan was first constructed as a two story wooden building in 1950 during the post war period. The building developed into a place that mainly sells wireless components and electronic equipment. After that, the building was renovated to be bigger, and when the otaku culture influx began in Akihabara, stores that sell figures, manga, and trading cards moved into Radio Kaikan, solidifying it as a symbol of this otaku city. Then in 2010, concerns over the structural integrity of the aging building began to arise. In response to this, the old building was demolished and a new building built.
Many companies have opened shop in the new Radio Kaikan that offer lineups heavy in otaku content including electronic goods, manga, figures, dolls, trading cards, stationery, military goods, and more. On the first lower floor there is also a beer hall restaurant called Ginza Lion Akihabara Radio Kaikan, a first for Radio Kaikan.
Radio Kaikan is a 1-minute walk from the Electric Town exit of the JR Akihabara Station. If you come to Akihabara to sightsee, make sure to stop in!
