The English dub of Giovanni's Island premiered on July 5, 2014 at the Los Angeles Convention Center during Anime Expo 2014, the United States' largest anime convention. Thousands of excited anime fans waited in line for several hours to be the first American audience to view this full-length movie.

In the exclusive interview above, Sakurai speaks about his dream to write children's shows and stories, the fascinating and complex relationship between Russians and Japanese after the end of World War II, and the significance of making Giovanni's Island an animated feature rather than a live-action film.

Giovanni's Island has been released in theaters all over the world. The film recently received the Jury Distinction at the 38th Annual Annecy International Animated Film Festival in Paris, France.
