Japacon TV is a show that introduces Japanese subcultures such as anime and Vocaloid and broadcasts at 24:00 every Friday on the Japanese satellite broadcast channel BS Fuji. This is Part 7 of the episode titled “Dream Collaborations Between Anime and Commercials?! The Frontlines of the Anime Advertisement Business.” In this part, we will focus on introducing anime film director Makoto Shinkai’s short film Dareka no Manazashi that was released in 2013.
Dareka no Manazashi is a 6-minute short anime film created by director Shinkai at the request of major Japanese real estate company Nomura Real Estate Development. The short film was created as a centerpiece at an event celebrating the 10th anniversary of Nomura Real Estate Development’s apartment brand Proud. Director Shinkai was offered the job after the staff at Nomura Real Estate Development saw the commercial by Taisei Corporation introduced in Parts 5 and 6 and their attention was grabbed by its high quality.
The completed short film wasn’t just shown at the event, however. It also picked up popularity for being screened along with director Makoto’s anime film released the same year, The Garden of Words, after which time it was also uploaded to YouTube.
One work creates the next, and that work creates yet another. It can be said that anime commercials are a fascinating field overflowing with such possibilities.
A summary and inside story of Darka no Manazashi are also discussed in this episode. Check out the program for the details!
