The screening event Hentai Animation Night 2014 will take place from Feb. 15-21 at Human Trust Cinema Shibuya in Shibuya, Tokyo. The screening will include 11 intense yet light short animation works from around the world in various genres. The screening is a commemoration of the Feb. 22 release of director Mirai Mizue’s work Wonder Full!!, which is being distributed by Calf. Hentai Animation Night 2014 will have a deep connection to both director Mizue and Calf.
Originally, Hentai Animation Night was a one-night event in celebration of the start of the young animator’s group Calf held at the 2012 Hiroshima International Animation Festival. According to Nobuaki Toi, a founding member of Calf, “There were a variety of works among the 1,950 out of 2,000 works that weren’t selected for the Hiroshima International Animation Festival. This was a chance to get a comprehensive view of worldwide animation works!” Hentai Animation Night began as a relatively unknown program of the festival.
After this, it developed into a continuous screening event. The works ”Ai to Heiwa” de wa Naku “Keno to Senso” and Impact ga Atte Waraeru have been chosen to be screened along with a live talk between MCs Mirai Mizue and Nobuaki Doi. Various screenings for this event that have picked up popularity have been held so far, including a week-long all-night event in Kyoto, an explosive all-night event at Baus Theater, and events in Yamaguchi, Sapporo, and other locations. This year’s event marks the first continuous week-long screening in Tokyo.
This time, a different style will be used instead of the MC live discussion. Printed material serving as a “guideline for enjoying the screenings” will be distributed in advance. In addition to being a reference for the screenings, this will likely serve as a tool for prolonging the experience after the event. It will also be beneficial for those who have an interest in short animations but are concerned over what to see. The screenings will each cost ￥1,500 and those who present an advance ticket to Wonder Full!! will get a ￥200 discount.
