Free! - Iwatobi Swim Club Episode 12 Recap: “Distant Free!”

At last, everyone is being honest! By swimming, they see a scenery they’ve never seen before!

On the day of the match, the tree near the pool looked like the tree they made a brick fence for for elementary school graduation. Haruka squats and writes something before his feet.

After arriving at the scene, Gō asks Rei about what he was talking with Rin about last night, but he just brushes it off with a vague answer. Haruka and the others watch Rin swimming in 100m freestyle. Unfortunately, he had a late start and didn’t make it to the finals.

Rin storms down the hallway, and Haruka and the others are shocked to hear his sharp words “I’m quitting swimming!” Makoto and Nagisa are shocked when they learn that Rin won’t be appearing in the medley relay.

That is when Rei starts to talk about last night, that Rin said he would quit swimming was because he had lost his confidence at his school abroad. But upon returning to Japan and having a match with Haruka, he has a breakthrough, and that is why he decides to swim his best at Samezuka Academy. However, he also adds that wasn’t what Rin really wanted.

Haruka asks, “How can you know that?” Rei answers that he, just like Rin, wants to swim with the best teammates, and that only the they can save Rin.

Haruka and the others go look for Rin. The medley relay is about to begin shortly. Haruka finds Rin, who tells him he is worthless and that Haruka is free to laugh at him. Haruka tells Rin that it was because of him that he came to understand the joy of swimming. At the end of the fight, they end up wrestling...and then, Rin sees “For the Team” written under the tree. It is what Haruka wrote just before the tournament was about to begin.

Rin starts crying and says, “I wanted to swim with you.” But it’s not too late yet

“This time I will show you the scenery you’ve never seen before,” Haruka tells him.

And the relay has started! Makoto and Nagisa see swimming in a new light, and they blaze past the champion school. The next in line would be Rei, but he is switched out for Rin instead! Rin also has a new lease on swimming, and he swims his hardest alongside his friends.

The race is over. The four of them join in a group hug, deeply moved. Rei looks at them and smiles: “You are really beautiful.”

In the end, they are disqualified from the relay even though they placed first, the tournament has ended, and the teachers are angry. When asked about their reason for doing this, they reply, “Even though we are on different teams, we are still teammates.” And as the special ending theme goes on, we can see that Iwatobi High School and Samezuka Academy starts joint training. Haruka and the others are running. Haruka starts explaining his reason for swimming, and the sky seems endlessly blue...

They all started swimming with different dreams in mind, but it grew to encompass more than just their own feelings.

There is surely something awaiting them at the end of their swimming, something full of light.
