A new large-scale anime project set to begin broadcasting in January 2014 has been revealed. This new anime is Space Dandy, a work being directed by Shinichirō Watanabe who has brought to the world tremendous hits including Cowboy Bebop. The anime is being co-directed by Shingo Natsume who has also worked on Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos. Scriptwriters for the anime include Dai Satō, Kimiko Ueno, and Keiko Nobumoto. Yoshiyuki Itō of Star Driver fame is handling the character designs and Thomas Romain is working on the designs of the spacecrafts. This lineup of talent is being praised from all sides.
Also, a point to take note of is that the anime is being produced by Bones. Their previous tag team with director Watanabe resulted in the masterpiece movie Cowboy Bebop the Movie: Knockin' on Heaven's Door. Therefore, it is anticipated that this work will be just as big. Including Satō and Nobumoto, much of the staff from Cowboy Bebop are also connected to this new anime. It appears that it will become a work that aims for worldwide popularity. The anime has already been introduced in the U.S. at the recent Otacon convention held in Baltimore from Aug. 8-10, so fans can expect this anime to go global from here on.
Also, well-known composer Yasuyuki Okamoto is taking charge of the theme song. Okamoto has created many hit works, and his song “Viva Namida,” a single released six years ago, was chosen as the theme song. For his tour being held this summer, this romantic song will be performed for fans along with visuals from Space Dandy. A project is also underway that surpasses just the theme song. An anime based on Okamoto is being made by director Watanabe and the staff. A music video for the short anime titled “Yasuyuki Okamoto Meet Space Dandy* is currently being produced.
Fans may be wondering what kind of anime Space Dandy will be. The anime follows Dandy, an alien hunter and the “dandiest man in space.” He collects bounties and searches for new forms of alien life. He is a simple and cheerful man who doesn’t sweat the small stuff. Along with his robot partner QT and an alien from Betelgeuse named Meow, Dandy travels to the far reaches of space. This anime is set to become an extraordinary space sci-fi comedy.
