The Pokémon Company released new information regarding Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, its two new titles for the Nintendo 3DS that are set to come out on Oct. 12, 2013. A new Pokémon form resembling Mewtwo was revealed called Mega Mewtwo, achieved through a new type of evolution called “Mega Evolution.”
Many other aspects of these highly evolved titles were revealed as well, including several Mega-Evolved Pokémon, an explanation about one of the requirements for achieving a Mega Evolution called “Mega Stones,” and a gym leader named Korrina who holds the key to Mega Evolution. It was also announced that, for a limited time, players will be able to get a Torchic holding a Mega Stone.
The identity of the mystery Pokémon is finally revealed: It’s a Mega-Evolved Mewtwo!
Mega Evolution is said to be an evolution beyond all evolution, and it has only been found in the Kalos region. It’s also believed to be the greatest mystery of Pokémon.
Up until now, each Pokémon has had a limit to the number of times it can evolve. However, Mega Evolution is an additional evolution that surpasses that limit. A Mega-Evolved Pokémon releases a hidden power all at once and exhibits strength unheard of in a regular evolution.
Unlike normal evolutions, Mega Evolutions occur only in battle. Once the battle ends, the Pokémon returns to its normal form. Also, only one Pokémon can Mega-Evolve during a single battle.
There are some Mega-Evolved Pokémon whose powers not only increase, but who also change types and abilities. It can serve as a way to instantly turn the tides in battle.
The Mega-Evolved version of Mewtwo is called Mega Mewtwo. Its form is sharper looking, and it appears as though it’s floating in air. The tail-like part that extends from the back of its head is said to be the organ that controls its powerful psychic abilities. Within the Pokémon series, Mewtwo reigns as the highest class of Pokémon. In particular, it has one of the highest special attack (Sp. Atk) ratings out of all the Pokémon. Mega Evolution makes this stat even higher, without a doubt putting all other Pokémon to shame.
Mewtwo’s exclusive move “Psystrike” uses Mega Mewtwo’s high special attack stat to its full extent. Certainly no one will be able to stop it now.
Mega-Evolved Pokémon Keep Appearing!
Mewtwo isn’t the only Pokémon that can Mega Evolve. Another such Pokémon is Lucario, whose Mega-Evolved form is Mega Lucario. Its Mega-Evolved form is larger than its normal one. The black pattern on its arms and legs comes from the high levels of energy coursing throughout its body. Lucario has both high attack and special attack stats, allowing it be well-balanced in battle. Once Mega-Evolved, its attack stat becomes even greater. Also, it gains the ability “Adaptability,” which gives greater power than normal to all moves within its type. The fighting-type move “Close Combat” was already powerful, but if used while Mega-Evolved, it will have a power that can’t be matched!
In order to Mega Evolve, Look for the Necessary Mega Stones!
Not all Pokémon are able to Mega Evolve. The ability to Mega Evolve is reserved for certain Pokémon only, and only after special conditions have been met.
One requirement is an item called a Mega Stone. The number of these special stones corresponds to the number of Pokémon who can Mega Evolve, and each one has its own name. For example, the Mega Stone that allows Lucario to Mega Evolve is called “Lucarionite.”
To use the Mega Stone, it must be given to the Pokémon to hold. A Pokémon capable of Mega Evolving can access this ability by first bringing a Mega Stone into battle. There are other requirements to achieving a Mega Evolution that will be introduced at a later time.
Some Mega Stones are hidden in secret places throughout the Kalos region. Which Pokémon can Mega Evolve? Where are the Mega Stones hidden? Finding them will certainly be one of the enjoyable elements of Pokémon X/Y.
