Information was released about the newest work by Kyoto Animation (KyoAni), the studio that gave the world numerous hit anime such as K-On!, The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi, and Free! - Iwatobi Swim Club. On Aug. 5, the official site for Kyōkai no Kanata opened and started delivering news.
The show is scheduled to air in 2013, and visuals plus new information regarding the production staff and characters were also made public. As it will start its TV broadcast in October, production on the work is progressing at full speed.
Kyōkai no Kanata received an honorable mention at the 2nd Kyoto Animation Award held by KyoAni in 2010. Nagomu Torii’s story about a girl who is the survivor of a certain clan and a half-yomu boy is now being made into an anime. The first two volumes of the original light novel have already been published under KyoAni’s label, KA Esuma Bunko.
This is the third example of KyoAni making an anime out of an award-winning work, with the first two being Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions and Free! - Iwatobi Swim Club. The use of this award is finally getting up to speed.
This work is advertised as an “adolescence action fantasy,” and its story revolves around the half-yomu Kanbara Akihito and Kuriyama Mirai, a member of the spirit world who inherited the ability to manipulate blood. On a day after school, Akihito comes across a girl who is about to jump off the roof. That girl is the sole survivor of a clan unique even to the spirit world, a clan of cursed blood. When these two meet, the world changes completely.
Kyōkai no Kanata is planned to start broadcasting in October on Tokyo MX, ABC Asahi Broadcast, BS11, Animax, and other networks. The show will be the directorial debut of Taichi Ishidate, series composition will be supervised by Jukki Hanada from Love Live! and Steins;Gate, and Miku Kadowaki will be doing the character design.
